Well written article. I agree on pretty much all points, and also caught Van Halen in 2007, but not yet on this tour. I agree that the band seems tighter than ever, and that although Dave was indeed the missing piece we've all craved over the last few decades; with his return, we definitely find that he has lost his edge. Dave is still 100% Dave, but seems to have lost that ability to zone in to that tight hard rocking focus when in the heart of some of the heaviest VH tunes.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of Dave's lyric lapses are indeed due to sketchy connections in the memory grid of his crazy brain. The damage of hard partying affects everyone differently over the years. I recall seeing a few high school burnouts only 10 to 15 years on, that could barely talk in sentences, let along sing and remember lyrics, so I guess I'm thankful for what we've got and what works. He certainly nails the vocals on the record.

I'm not sure that I will catch the tour this year, unless the tix were in the $50 or less range. And although I think Wolfgang does a fantastic job, I will never truly rest in peace until the original gang of four one day get together and rip off a few more tunes together. Nostalgia? Yes. Still rockin' hard. Oh yeah, baby!

Hi Nic,

I'm cannot login into my email with AT&T. I can login with my iPHone though. AT&T says its not a server problem, it is something going on with my iMac which is using Lion. My Antivirus is Intego VirusBarrier 6, and my firewall setting is on simple. Don't know where to turn for help. I'm looking the techhandyman number. Sure miss you and the Cyber Crew a lot.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Annie

Hello Nic.
I was fun to listen to the banter between you and Mike D.
I have to say that it was because of how you explained the Apple system for the IPhone that has me choosing it over BB and an Android device.
Can you tell me if you will be offering any opinions & free advice on the Optiflux Facebook page?
Thanks, Derrick

Great Post Nick. Yes, I've been a late night Radio Junkie since a little kid. WGN has been a huge part of my life. AS I am still up at 4:00am listening to Steven and Johnnie Finish up, Rich Koz *aka Svengoolie from WCIU is on with them. That makes 3 of my Chicago media favorites talking. Just wanted to say thanks to all you guys and folks from the Cyber Crew. You gave us all lots of laughs and great information. I learned a lot of tricks from Steve and Johnnie about computers. I never touched one till 2001 and didn't own one till 2005. Now? I've learned enough to have partitioned hard drives, used Linux distro's, Messed with MACS, dual booted and gained enough knowledge to instruct others on things like Host file protection and how to surf safely. Most of it was thanks to Steve, Johnnie and the Cyber Crew. I like Mike D's idea about keeping an On Line version of WWN going in some form. I'll always appreciate S&J and all you guys for your efforts. Thanks a lot Steve and Johnnie, *and Nick for the laughs*, enjoy your fun, you've earned it. :0)

Boy am I happy I found this post! I just happened to stumble upon it thanks to a random U2 google search.

This was my first U2 show ever. I saw them when they came to Baltimore 2 months ago. Let me say that I totally agree with you on every single argument you make in this post. Being my first U2 show, you would think I would have been over the moon and not able to find anything to complain about, but being the true music-obsessed person that I am, I was a bit disappointed with this show; particularly the song selections.

The structure itself was epic. Utterly surreal. Had it not been for the stage, the show would have been a major, major letdown for me. I sat in the rear portion of the stadium (somewhat behind Larry) and at times, it felt like I had just paid a ticket for a backstage pass. Yes, the stage and screens were visible from a 360 angle, but the performances were not. For all of us in these sections, we felt totally neglected by the band, and for very few instances did they acknowledge that side of the stadium... Don't call it a 360 tour if you are only going to play to one side of the place!

The setlist was something to be left desired. My high point was waiting for Bloody Sunday to come along. And just when it did, did we all jump out of our seats and belt out wholeheartedly along (at least I know I did, fist in the air and all). This amazing high was quickly killed by choosing to play Walk On after a song like this. Who does that?

U2 with such a vast catalogue of music have the luxury not many bands are able to say and do. They can choose meticulously what type of tempo they want their show to have. They can orchestra the waves of emotion and interaction to a perfect storm but they really dropped the ball on this one. It's sad to see people that have paid so much for a ticket to just be sitting and waiting for the next song to come along because they just can't skip that track like they normally would if they were listening to the cd.

Would I go see them again? Maybe. Was it something I regret? Not really. Will I remember it forever? Oh hell yeah! To be part of 80,000 people in one space and to see the magnitude of such a stage is something that will forever be surreal.

Thanks for the words Johnny.. I've also had my own life personally intertwine with Cheap Trick back in the late 90's... They've been one of my Top 10 bands since their very first record in '77. I was glad to hear that everyone walked away from this one unhurt... lucky... it could have obviously been a much sadder story.

Thanks for posting and thanks for listening.

Saw this too. The Sky looked angry alright. Too bad the driver was injured, wonder if it was his brake leg or gas pedal leg? Brush with RICK Nielsen story >> Went to School near Rockford IL. Lived there for years. Was a Cheap Trick fan and still have their FIRST Album sitting here looking at me. *YEAH I'm old, I have Montrose Vinyl too. Saw RICK and a friend at the TACO JOHNS in Rockford in the 80s. The one that used to be by East High School. "Hey Rick, How are you!?" I asked, Made sure to say hello to his friend too. I hate it when someone walks up that knows ME, but totally ignores my friend without acknowledging them. HE signs an autograph for me then says, "Enjoy your Taco" HA! ONE Week later at an OLD, SMALL Taco Johns store up in Loves Park, I walk in, THERE he is again. He turns and looks at me and does a double take. Ha, NO, I said, "I'm not following you Rick, I just love Taco JOHN more than the "BELL" and live a few blocks away from THIS Taco Johns." He wipes his brow and goes...."whew!" Good guy and his son was a great Golfer. Wonder where Bun E Carlos eats? or SIB from Boston? Enjoying WWN on AM720 keep up the fun.

Hey Peeulosi... sorry to have offended you so profoundly. Truth is, it sounds like you take all that political party stuff pretty seriously... That would make us polar opposites in this regard I suppose. What I know is that once the oil runs out, all such silly discussions are going to be looked back on as an utter waste of time.
